Anolis Eminere-4 RGBCW fixtures

BACKGROUND

Mirfield Station, just north of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire has been part of an investment programme managed by train operator Grand Central part of the Arriva Group. It formed part of a renovation scheme across the North East and West Riding routes to deliver much needed improvements at a series of stations in the region.
The regeneration programme included the revamp of the Mirfield Station underpass which was renowned for being unwelcoming, poorly lit and uninviting for commuters. As the underpass provided the key point of access for passengers to enter the station, it was vital to increase lighting levels to make the area safer, more welcoming and comfortable for customers with these much needed improvements.

The project was a joint venture spearheaded by Network Rail and Kirklees Council working in close collaboration with Lighting Designer Kevin Dugdale from Designs for Lighting and Studiotech based in Manchester who carried out the installation. The ultimate aim was to provide improved LED lighting to the existing underpass and consider options to achieve a desired colourful effect running down one side of the underpass’s brickwork with an appropriate high output solution. The chosen fixtures needed to offer both durability and quality, as the lights would be operational for approximately 18 hours per day, 7 days a week.

SOLUTION

After a number of demos, site visits and discussions considering a series of imaginative solutions, the Anolis Eminere 4 RGBCW fixtures were specified due to their brightness and versatility, which offered a robust and durable solution to withstand the climatic elements, whilst not compromising on the delivery of unparalleled colour. Coupled with the sleek flexible linear design, exceptional optical performance and colour mixing capability, the high pressure extruded aluminium housing of the Eminere provided the perfect solution to secure neatly and easily to the top of the wall along one side of the underpass.

The specification also required a suitable product that could provide rich hues and texturing to compliment a detailed and lively multi-coloured mural running along one wall of the underpass, depicting the history and people of the area. The artistic creation had been delivered by a community partnership programme at the end of 2019 comprising of local schools, youth groups, the fire station and local businesses so it was important to compliment and enhance this artistic masterpiece to showcase this vibrant display.

A total of 16 Anolis Eminere – 4 fixtures in 1.2 metre lengths were deployed due to their ability to produce strong saturated colours with a narrow 9⁰ beam angle to reduce excessive light spillage. It was also important to offer a luminaire that produced strong saturated colour variants and a narrow lens to tightly focus the beam and ensure the installation was eye catching and impactful. The colour transition capability of the Eminere ensures smooth dimming and a fine degree of colour tuning which was so important to this project.

Mirfield Station is currently featuring a multi-coloured rainbow effect in support and recognition to the NHS and frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Council also aim to programme the fixtures to mark other important occasions such as St Patrick’s day, Pride, whilst also having the ability to reflect the blue and white shirt colours of ‘The Terriers’ supporters of nearby Huddersfield Town Football Club and not forgetting the claret and gold strip of the Huddersfield Giants - Rugby’s Super League. The Eminere fixtures offer the versatility to change the colour of the underpass to signify special events throughout the year or highlight links to nearby sporting fixtures of the towns two clubs with the appropriate colour scheme.

Lighting Designer Kevin Dugdale from Designs for Lighting who specified the product and was responsible for overseeing the project on behalf of Kirklees Council said:
“Mirfield Underpass was inspirational scheme, allowing myself the freedom and opportunity to produce the initial concept lighting design idea and artistic 3D lighting model, present and sell the lighting proposal to the stakeholders and then take the design from preliminary design stage to construction.
The project has introduced fully functionally colour changing to allow us to celebrate both local and national events and with the new functional road lighting improve the safety to both motorist and non-motorist users.
Our original goal to improve the overall area aesthetics to its users has been achieved and I would personally like to thank everyone involved in the project.”
